The 2020 Legal Technology Job Market Year in Review

Check out TRU's "The 2020 Legal Technology Job Market Year in Review," published in Legaltech News!

The COVID-19 pandemic radically altered the landscape of the legal technology job market, but not entirely in unanticipated ways. TRU’s 2019 Year in Review hinged on the observation that 2019’s legal technology job market trends were continuations and culminations of steadily emerging annual patterns. These trends, specifically remote/work-from-home and contract workforce augmentation, as well as the converging of disciplines, have been hyper-accelerated this year to the point of incredulity.

Other unforeseen new realities have also developed as direct results of our work-from-home containment in 2020, some of which have irrevocably changed hiring practices and industry segmentation growth potential. TRU Tips

An online job ad receives about 250 resumes on average. From these 250 applications, about 2% receive interviews.

Top 3 Reasons A Staffing Agency Is Preferable To Self-Submission
  • 98% of Fortune 500 companies use Applicant Tracking Systems (ATS), which often weed out 75% of applications before they reach human eyes, sometimes for irrelevant reasons like the way your resume is formatted.
  • As many as 50% of jobs are filled internally before even making it to the public eye. Some of these jobs are posted online to fulfill legal requirements, but an external candidate has little chance of landing the role.
  • Referrals have a 50% shot of getting an interview whereas for non-referrals, that drops to just 3%. In fact, 40% of hires come from the referral pool, which is only 7% of applicants.
