Months into the COVID-19 pandemic, businesses are still trying to manage the economic fallout—which in some cases includes layoffs. Thanks to social media, many of those departures are taking place on a very public stage, where corporate legal departments may have to help their organizations balance the reputational damage that comes from saying either too much or too little at all. Journalist Frank Ready sought out TRU founder and CEO Jared Coseglia to share his thoughts on the subject.
"Jared Coseglia, founder and CEO of TRU Staffing Partners Inc., indicated that employers are savvy to the realities that anything they put in writing could be put on the internet.
"'And so for that reason, I think that the language companies use and the way in which they terminate employees has developed a level of vagueness that often leaves employees dissatisfied at the departure,' he said.
"Such dissatisfaction can often be rooted in the employee’s search for the “why” behind the dismissal, a question that Coseglia believes that employers—at least in the United States—are not particularly incentivized to answer. 'I think a lot of that has to do with fear or risk of exposure of saying the wrong thing or the wrong way and having that then put online,' he said."
