Legal Project Manager (VENDOR)

ANYWHERE, United States
  • Employment Type: Direct Hire
Our client is looking for a Legal/Document Review Project Manager. In this role, the Project Manager will oversee managed document review projects including estimates, financial projects, staff management, leadership, performance metrics, quality, deadlines, and tracking. The ideal candidate will have experience with review platforms such as Relativity and Canopy. This role is remote-based, with occasional travel to our office in Tempe, AZ, approximately 2-3 times a year. A J.D. is required, preferably active and in good standing in a U.S. jurisdiction. Resumes to [email protected].

Our client is recruiting a Legal Project Manager who has substantive experience in all aspects of e-discovery and managed document review. Managers will typically have several years of document review experience and serve as project managers under the supervision of senior managers (depending on project size, a manager might be simultaneously assigned to more than one project). Managers have primary project management responsibilities around effort estimates, financial projections, communications with external stakeholders, construction of continuous learning workflows/dataset analysis, and play a significant role in staff management and leadership, performance metrics, quality, deadlines, and tracking to financial performance and efficiencies.
The Project Manager is responsible not just for project quality, but for thinking about project quality creatively (a manager is expected to be alert to opportunities for process improvement, better quality control, smarter and more efficient audits, and so on), and meaningfully engaging with customer escalation responses or other feedback to devise better review approaches.
A subtle but key difference in emphasis vis-a-vis a team lead role is that the latter’s responsibilities are weighted toward process adherence, whereas the Manager’s responsibilities are toward process improvement. Managers typically serve as the client-facing lead or co-lead on their projects, even as they are supervised by senior managers, such as (depending on project size) a Sr. Manager, Associate Director, Director, or SME.
This role is remote-based, with occasional travel to our office in Tempe, AZ - 2-3 times a year.

Specifically, you will:
  • Manage one large, or two small-to-medium projects effectively (team sizes of 10-20 people), without intensive oversight
  • Have significant project management responsibilities including communication with customers and vendors, especially on logistical or administrative matters
  • Manage a project in all other respects including staff management and leadership, performance metrics, quality, deadlines, tracking, and assurance with supervision from your senior managers who serve as the customer lead
  • Serve as the point person for the project team to spot/address/escalate issues that aren’t substantive, e.g., workflow problems or suggestions, and team related issues
  • Have administrative responsibilities, primarily centered on the employee appraisal process, internal reporting, compliance, and process adherence
  • Provide accurate scoping of new projects
  • Effectively communicate with counsel or the customer with respect to instruction changes, suggestions for changes, and seeking/interpreting guidance
  • Ensure compliance with policies and processes
  • Prepare external communications (written and oral)
  • Maximize platform reporting/tracking ability
  • Mentor non-managerial junior colleagues
  • Oversee the accuracy of project-specific revenue and effort projections
  • Ensure that projects are completed within budgeted hours

  • Highly skilled in e-discovery platforms and relevant technology including on managing assignments, workflow (including the ability to suggest changes to workflow), understanding of platform abilities, limitations, metrics, and reporting capabilities
  • Strong project management skills, including firm grasp of processes, metrics, and productivity-implications of project workflow
  • Strong client and external party-facing skills: main point of contact with external representatives in connection with particular projects
  • Strong presentation and training skills; project-specific training (of junior colleagues) is a core responsibility
  • Effectively shares e-discovery/platform knowledge with colleagues
  • Highly skilled on multiple e-discovery platforms
  • Strong subject matter expertise, and ability to adapt and learn any type of subject matter

Skills for Success:
  • Strong subject matter expertise and ability to adapt and learn any type of subject matter
  • Highly responsive to the needs of both internal (including reporting managers, other project managers and team members) as well as external customers
  • Able to effectively gauge client needs even if not expressly stated
  • Expected to innovate and improve upon document review processes and techniques
  • Effortlessly manages deadlines without delivery delays
  • Demonstrates an ability to perform Sr. Manager/Director’s role in their absence
  • Routinely assigns and oversees quality control and audit functions on cases
  • Displays significant ability to temporarily lead projects in the absence of senior management

Technical Skills:
  • Certification in Relativity, Everlaw, or other review platform preferred, with Relativity Certified Administrator (RCA) certification strongly preferred
  • Six Sigma certification preferred

  • J.D. required, with being active and in good standing in a U.S. jurisdiction preferred
