Privacy Attorney (CORPORATION)

Our client, a Fortune top 20, is seeking an experienced privacy attorney to join the legal team at its headquarters in Washington state outside of Seattle. This attorney must have at least ten years of relevant experience with a minimum of eight years in data privacy law. This role must show a thorough understanding of and have experience with global privacy regimes and regulations, including GDPR and CCPA. Specific experience building CCPA programs, addressing nuances of employee data regulations under CCPA, experience with membership services/retail, and ability to thoughtfully guide the use (or non-use) of data for marketing while balancing the sensitivity of always protecting customer data and trust is necessary. The candidate must be comfortable operating in an autonomous environment with confidence in their judgments, but with an appreciation for collaborative culture. This role will own the responsibility of setting, revising, and guiding the privacy posture of the company. This person must have impeccable privacy credentials and, more importantly, possess nuanced and articulate privacy instincts such as the ability to handle ad hoc questions or requests and the ability to problem solve with teams across the business, including legal, operations and more. Responsibilities:

  • Provides privacy advice to all the client’s global businesses, with particular focus on the membership and marketing group, privacy operations and the information technology department
  • Provides legal support for the membership and marketing groups, including advertising and marketing advice, negotiating contracts for marketing suppliers and legal advice to guide strategic initiatives; drives compliance efforts related to U.S. advertising and marketing laws and regulations
  • Creates global and national data privacy compliance frameworks and deploy them across the company
  • Provides advice necessary to ensure that processes and activities meet or exceed current global data privacy requirements
  • Tracks and understands global privacy legislation, evolving regulations, and enforcement
  • Develops, drafts, and maintains privacy policies and procedures, notices, cookie policies, and online behavioral advertising policies; reviews email marketing and marketing guidelines, compliance materials, and employee training materials for privacy concerns
  • Drafts, advises on, and negotiates data privacy provisions in supplier and business contracts
  • Develops privacy-by-design frameworks and guide implementation of privacy risk mitigations

Qualifications:

  • Significant relevant experience with ample experience data privacy law
  • Thorough understanding of and experience with global privacy regimes and regulations, including GDPR and CCPA
  • Excellent business judgment and ability to assess legal risk while also thinking strategically and providing practical advice; business orientation in interactions with senior management and other stakeholders
  • Demonstrated ability to independently manage a diverse and complex workload while maintaining priorities and proactively anticipating issues
  • Exceptional communication, analytical and writing skills
  • Ability and desire to work both autonomously and collaboratively
  • Experience overseeing outside counsel
  • Strong execution and project management skills and ability to corral stakeholders from across the organization on cross-functional projects
  • Certified Information Privacy Professional certification preferred
  • Advertising and marketing law experience preferred
