Staff Attorney Supervisor (LAW FIRM)

Our client, one of the nation’s premier Am Law firms, is seeking to add a Staff Attorney Supervisor to its thriving Washington, D.C. e-discovery team. The successful applicant will have significant experience in complex e-discovery and team management. This attorney must be licensed to practice in Washington, D.C. and an RCA certification is very strongly preferred, as is experience working in a large organization. This position will train and supervise staff attorneys, as well as provide relief to the litigation support team by batching and creating tags when necessary. This is a sophisticated position requiring both substantive and technical knowledge. All attorneys applying should have demonstrated excellence in management, strong technical abilities including Relativity, and be comfortable communicating with all levels of professionals in the e-discovery process including contract attorneys, partners, vendors, clients, and other stakeholders. Duties & Responsibilities

  • Ensures the success of the Staff Attorney Program according to standard business metrics, such as utilization, client satisfaction, and quality of work product
  • Resolves personnel problems, up to and including taking disciplinary action and terminating employees
  • Assigns projects to staff attorneys, assisting with projects (especially as it concerns establishing best practices), and coordinatesworkflow
  • Champions the widespread use of metrics tools to ensure document review quality and productivity across the department
  • Monitors and manages productivity and resource availability
  • Reviews and approves billable hours
  • Maintains administrative records, such as attendance and vacation
  • Participates in yearly salary reviews and evaluations, as well as providing regular feedback and constructive criticism
  • Supervises and coordinates of document review teams to ensure that all team members are working efficiently and meets quality and output expectations established by the case teams
  • Facilitates the communication between the document review team and the associates and partners responsible for case
  • Works with the firm’s litigation support group and/or e-discovery vendors to communicate and resolve end-user problems with the document databases and review systems in use
  • Reviews, analyzes, and categorizes documents and information in online-document review databases, and/or hard-copy document collections
  • Assists with the review quality control and review metrics reporting processes
  • Assists in preparation of privilege logs and other similar tasks attendant to document review and production projects
  • Prepares departmental statistical reports
  • Coordinates with HR for the recruitment of staff attorneys
  • Assists with long-range planning and needs assessment for staffing
  • Performs other duties as directed by the Staff Attorney Manager or Firm management


  • Significant document review supervisory experience in an AmLaw 100 or 200 law firm setting working on large litigation, regulatory, or investigation matters
  • Current good standing in the DC Bar
  • Excellent organizational aptitude, interpersonal skills, project coordination ability and a strong service focus; must be highly organized and detail oriented
  • Excellent management and communications skills; must be comfortable delegating tasks, managing teams, and providing leadership
  • Good working knowledge of the Electronic Discovery Reference Model, and how document review fits into overall discovery processes; must have the ability to coordinate efforts with Litigation Support, Paralegals, and various vendors to promote successful client representation
  • Expert knowledge of a discovery document review projects’ purpose and typical work-flows; must have a thorough understanding of the contract attorney market and factors that affect contract attorney availability and staffing
  • Significant experience with on-line document review systems such as Relativity, Ringtail, Kroll, or other similar document review software platforms; experience to include searching, batching, early case assessment, analytics and other managerial functions
  • Ability to work under pressure and a willingness to work additional hours and help others with deadline intensive projects is required


  • A JD from an accredited US law school or the equivalent is required
