Discovery Attorney (LAW FIRM)

Our client, an Am Law Top 20 law firm, is seeking a Discovery Attorney in its Los Angeles office, supporting the employment team. This Attorney will supplement the employment law team, and handle discovery related matters as part of litigation case teams including drafting fact and issue related memoranda, developing discovery requests and responses, researching witness files, drafting review protocols, managing and conducting document review, generating privilege logs, and other necessary tasks in support of complex litigation. This is a unique opportunity to work with exceptional attorneys on high-profile and cutting-edge employment litigation matters. Thorough, expert-level understanding of state and federal court discovery rules, and rules of attorney-client and attorney work product privilege is a requirement as well as an expert understanding of e-discovery technology (e.g. Relativity) and project management. In addition to several years of substantive employment law practice experience and very strong discovery background, all applicants must hold a J.D. from an ABA-accredited institution and be a current member in good standing with the State Bar of California. Position Description:    

  • Possesses and maintains expertise on discovery-related legal issues such as privilege, case law developments in discovery and advancements in e-discovery and litigation technology systems, and proven ability to apply such expertise to the facts of a given case
  • Possesses expert ability to perform quality control of substantive document review performed by others
  • Demonstrates significant experience using relational database technology, and skilled capacity to work with internal Data Science team to collect and analyze evidence
  • Offers deep understanding of how to perform pre-suit due diligence pertaining to discovery
  • Prepares privilege logs, redaction logs, and meet-and-confer letters
  • Possesses nuanced ability to identify documents and evidence for use at deposition and trial
  • Assists in deposition preparation, draft discovery documents, and prepare deposition outlines
  • Coordinates discovery process and the flow of discovery documents between attorneys and clients
  • Participates in special projects and other duties as assigned, this position may require travel

Qualifications:

  • J.D. from an ABA-accredited institution and current member in good standing with the State Bar of California (required)
  • Experience in employment litigation, including extensive discovery and e-discovery experience at a well-respected law firm
  • Excellent writing and oral communication skills
  • Thorough, expert-level understanding of state and federal court discovery rules, and  rules of attorney-client and attorney work product privilege
  • Expert understanding of e-discovery technology (e.g. Relativity) and project management
  • Deep familiarity with the litigation process, including all phases of discovery and trial
  • Strong understanding of discovery practice in wage and hour, retaliation, discrimination, and employment class action, including experience with litigation support software such as Relativity, Concordance, CaseMap, and LiveNote
  • Some litigation experience at a well-respected firm
  • Ability to work independently and with minimal supervision
  • Excellent organizational skills
  • Excellent analytical skills and ability to handle work on multiple concurrent matters
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Superior attention to detail and the ability to meet tight deadlines
  • Expertise in document review procedures, document review platforms, and litigation support technologies
  • Flexibility to work extended and often unpredictable hours, including weekends and holidays
